We provide blackberry leaves for zoos, museums, research institutions, and schools that maintain leafcutter (or leaf-cutting) ant colonies. The leaves we harvest are naturally grown and have never been sprayed on. Mostly of the Himalayan variety (Rubus armeniacus), they love the mild climate of the Pacific Northwest and thrive on their own here on our wooded acres outside of Eugene, Oregon.
Blackberry Leaves on Canes
Blackberry leaves on canes are packed and shipped in cartons. Each carton weighs about 10 pounds and contains approximately 7 pounds net weight of material. We lined the inside of the box with plastic sheeting to keep the leaves fresh during shipment. Each carton costs $50 plus the cost of shipping, which is usually UPS or Fedex Ground.
Blackberry Leaves Only
Blackberry leaves are trimmed from the canes and packed in plastic bags. Because of the lighter weight and smaller volume, we will be able to ship these via priority mail at an affordable price. Less packing material and less shipping volume makes this a better option for the environment. Once you receive the shipment, the bags of leaves can be conveniently stored in a refrigerator to stay fresh longer. Each box is 12x12x8 inches and contains minimum one pound of fresh leaves. For orders of two or more boxes, each box costs $35 plus USPS Priority shipping. For a single box order, the cost is $40 plus USPS Priority shipping.
Blackberry Leaves on Long Canes
We can also provide blackberry leaves on long canes to be used in in leaf-cutting ant exhibits. Please contact us for your needs.
Inquires and Orders
Please send questions or orders via our contact form or email to info@blackberryoregon.com. You can also call us at (541)359-0600. We will be happy to answer questions you have and customize orders based on your needs.
When you place an order, we will send you a quote including product and shipping costs. You will be able to pay the invoice online. Generally, we harvest and ship twice a week. Blackberry leaves are harvested and shipped on the same day. You can expect that your order will be shipped 1 to 3 business days from the time of the payment.
Routine Supplies
We will be happy to set up a supply routine for your leafcutter ant colony so that you don’t need to repeat the ordering process each week or each month. We will harvest and ship the amount of blackberry leaves you need on a routine basis so that your leaf-cutting ant colonies are never out of leaves for their fugus fermenting factory.
